Birds on a Wire

This morning I looked out of my bedroom window and saw hundreds of birds sitting on the telephone cable that stretches across the farm fields. They looked like Starlings, but do Starlings migrate?

The garden is looking grateful for the little rain that we have had. It has been such a dry September and October. I saw such a wonderful sight of the Sparrows taking a bath in the rain water that had fallen on the debris cover of the Splash Pool in front of the deck. The Sparrows would fly in, have a quick splash in the water and then dash back to the cover of the hedge only to repeat the whole performance again and again. It was truly delightful just to watch them darting in for a quick flutter in the water and so comical too!

The leaves on the trees are turning such wonderful reds and yellows and surprisingly are not falling as quickly as expected. The colours are so spectacular and cheer the early misty mornings.

Clouds

There were vertical clouds in the sky today. The Buzzards circled and lazily flapped their wings occasionally as they rode the thermals above the house, rising higher and higher.

14th October 2009

Phil the pheasant visited the garden today. I saw him in the gazebo under the table picking up the scattered birdseed. It has been a long while since he last brought his wife and 4 offspring to feed on the mound.

The squirrel was back today. He knocked on the dinningroom french door to let me know he was there. He scampered up the pole of the bird table, flicked the seed in the bowl and then with a huge jump into the Sycamore tree, disappeared.

Squirrel

11/10/2009
A squirrel skipped across the lawn, stopping now and then to sniff the air. His tail bobbed and sailed after him as he scampered looking for fallen nuts and acorns amongst the Autumn leaves. he bounded up the grassy mound, stopped and then disappeared amoungst the shrubs.
